Other contributions Sessions 1, 2 and 5 will start with an invited review talk. The number of oral presentation is limited for all the sessions and emphasis is placed on poster presentation. The size of each poster board is 1.8 m x 1.2 m. We offer two kinds of poster presentation; only one-day presentation and whole-period presentation. The full review papers and the abstracts of other papers are included in the abstract volume which is available upon registration. -------------- CALL FOR PAPER -------------- DEADLINE for submission of abstracts is "15 APRIL 1996". Abstracts should be submitted in plain text form via email to ==================== EMW@geo.titech.ac.jp ==================== Each abstract must include the title, author and affiliation, address, email address and the session for which the paper is intended. Also please indicate your choice, one-day or whole-period presentation, if your paper is assigned for a poster by the Program Committee. Those who find difficulty to send via email may send via fax or postal mail to: 13TH WORKSHOP ON ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION IN THE EARTH c/o Yoshimori Honkura Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Tokyo Institute of Technology 2-12-1 Ookayama, Tokyo 152, Japan E-mail: EMW@geo.titech.ac.jp Phone: +81-3-5734-2341 Fax: +81-3-5499-4093 REGISTRATION Registration form should be returned by 15 APRIL 1996. The registration fee includes one abstract volume, coffee and tea, "Ice Breaker" and the Workshop dinner. The registration fee is: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Before April 15th 1996 | On and After April 15th 1996 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Full Delegate | 15000 Japanese Yen | 20000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Student | 5000 Japanese Yen | 7000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Accompanying Person | 5000 Japanese Yen | 7000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Current rate: 100 Japanese Yen = 1 US$. * Registration fee is not requested for accompanying persons younger than 18. TRAVEL INFORMATION There are two main points of entry into Japan; Narita (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka) International Airports. All the participants are advised to take a domestic flight to Hakodate. For domestic flights, travelers must go to Haneda Airport, from Narita, usually by limousine bus. It takes about two hours and costs 2900 yen. Eight flights are available for Haneda-Hakodate. In the case of Kansai Airport, two domestic flights are available to Hakodate. Local buses for Onuma are available for each flight at the airport. It takes about one hour and costs about 1000 yen. If we receive a sufficient number of requests, group tours will be organized for the following flights. Please note that time tables may be subject to slight changes. Please consult your travel agent on which is more economical, this group tour or your own flight plan including domestic flights. If you find that this group tour is more economical, please send ticket requests to LOC. MT-DIW3 participants will take the flight "JAL#547" together and so unless you arrange this flight by yourself, ticket requests must be made to LOC. 7/11 JAL#547 Haneda --> Hakodate 17:05 18:25 @15000 yen (including bus fare to Onuma) 7/11 ANA#425 Kansai --> Hakodate 14:25 16:05 @21000 yen (including bus fare to Onuma) 7/18 JAL#548 Hakodate --> Haneda 19:15 20:35 @18000 yen (including bus fare from Onuma) 7/19 JAL#542 Hakodate --> Haneda 10:15 11:35 @16000 yen (including bus fare from Onuma) 7/19 ANA#422 Hakodate --> Kansai 13:20 15:25 @21000 yen (including bus fare from Onuma) There is another route via Sapporo International Airport, located about 200 km north of Onuma. Domestic flights for Haneda-Sapporo and Kansai-Sapporo are more frequent, but it takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes from Sapporo to Onuma by Japan Railways (JR) express trains. This route may be more economical in the sense that the domestic flight fare may be included in the international flight fare. Please consult your travel agent on this possibility. If this is the case, we will provide more information on JR train services upon request. For detailed information on domestic travel after the workshop, the Japan Travel Bureau (JTB) agency will prepare a desk at the seminar house on 12th (Fri) July. Reservation can be made at this desk and tickets will be provided during the workshop. PASSPORT AND VISA All the foreign visitors are required to carry a valid passport. Concerning visas, LOC made an inquiry on visas to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, but the requirements depend on countries. Foreign participants are advised to check the visa status well before the EM Induction Workshop. BANKING No bank service is available at Onuma and currency exchange is troublesome. It is strongly recommended that foreign visitors exchange foreign currency at Narita or Kansai Airport. Exchange service is available in downtown Hakodate, but please remember it takes about one hour to go downtown. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation is rather restricted but LOC will try to meet any requests from participants. Those who have special requests should ask LOC in advance. HOTEL LOC already booked a considerable number of rooms of the following class-B hotels. These rooms are all of twin or triple type and single use is available only with extra charge. The charges shown below are all . Shuttle bus service is available but hotels are all within 30 minute walk from the Seminor House. [IMPORTANT] Please note that the charges are all PER PERSON. The service charge and tax are included. Prince Hotel: Twin = 11500 YEN (twin use rate) Bath, Shower, Toilet Breakfast included Hotel Nitto: Twin = 8000 YEN (twin use rate) Single = 11000 YEN Bath, Shower, Toilet Breakfast and dinner included Croford Inn: Twin or triple = 8000 YEN (Single use not available.) Bath, Shower, Toilet Breakfast and dinner included Pension Kaza: Twin or triple = 7800 YEN (Single use difficult.) Shared Bath, Shower, Toilet Breakfast and dinner included Youth Hostel: 4300 YEN Shared Bath, Shower, Toilet Breakfast and dinner included *Only Japanese meals available. HOME STAY Nanae Town has been encouraging an international communication program and has kindly offered a home-stay program for students and young scientists from foreign countries. LOC is happy to help those who wish to enjoy Japanese culture and life style. This program is based on voluntary hospitalities of families of Nanae Town, and the only requirement is the following common sense; "Do in Rome as the Romans do." CAMPING There are a few camping fields in the Onuma area. July in Hokkaido may be a good season for camping. LOC will help those who wish to enjoy camping. Let out-door freaks get together. (EM MODELERS are welcome rather than EM FIELD WORKERS!) RESTAURANT There are few restaurants and all the participants are advised to have breakfast and dinner at hotels. In particular, the Seminar House is located in a forest and only lunch boxes are provided, and all the participants MUST make reservation for lunch. Otherwise you will miss your lunch! ==================================================================== Accommodation will be reserved upon receiving the enclosed forms by 15 APRIL 1996, according to the type of accommodation required. NO DEPOSITS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL THE TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION. HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE CANCELLATION AFTER 1ST/JUNE/'96. ==================================================================== RECREATION AND RECEPTION (LOCAL EVENT) On 14th (Sun) July, LOC offers local events with Nanae Town Office. During daytime, we prepare some optional events such as "Park Golf", "Trecking to Mt. Komagatake (1131 m)", "Bowling Competition", and "Orienteering Competition". Habitants of Nanae Town will join the events. At 16:00, a barbecue party will be held at the garden in front of the seminar house, and all the participants are invited to this party. We are all thankful to this invitation of Nanae Town Office and we hope that all the participants will enjoy this party with the people of Nanae Town. During the party, some kinds of attraction may be introduced; such as "Taiko" (oriental drum) performance and "Bon Odori" (Japanese spiritual dance). EXCURSION On 15th (Mon) July, the workshop excursion is scheduled to "Usu Volcano". There are many surface manifestations of the active island arc in the Usu Volcano area and the area is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Hokkaido, or even in Japan. Usu Volcano is famous for the disastrous eruption in 1977. The current activity is mild and we can go up to the summit area by ropeway, where we can watch a newly formed cryptodome on the summit crater. We can also enjoy, if the weather permits, the splendid scenery of Lake Toya (the 3rd largest caldera lake in Japan with a periphery of 43 km) and the Showa-Shinzan active volcano. There were only barley fields before the extrusion of the Showa-Shinzan, which started at the end of 1943. In the subsequent 2 years, repeated eruptions created one small mountain of lava dome. We also plan to visit a volcanic museum at Toya Hot Spring and the Usu Volcano Observatory of Hokkaido University. FINANCIAL SUPPORT All requests for support are to be directed to the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, "Yoshi Honkura (yhonkura@geo.titech.ac.jp)." [IMPORTANT] The request must reach him on or before 15TH APRIL 1996. Requests received after that date cannot be entertained, as decisions must be made in time for supported participants to book the cheapest possible airfares. The principle aim of the support funds is to enable as many students and young scientists as possible to attend our workshops. Given the high costs associated with the Onuma workshop, there will also be an attempt to aid more established scientists. Information Required A request for support should include the following information: Basic information Name, title Precise Address Email Year of last degree, title, institution Current Position Student? Yes/No Rapid contact method? Fax? Email? Research Focus of current research activities Most recent bibliography (5 max) Proposed title of presentation(s) Brief description(s) of presentation(s) Financial Amount of travel request with detailed cost breakdown Airfare Ground transportation Do you require accommodation paid? Do you require per diem support? Do you require registration paid? Amount of other support provided by other sponsors List requests to other agencies for support Others Justification (for non-student) Performing in any "official" capacity? Do you intend to stay for the whole meeting ? YES/NO Any previous financial support from IUGG/IAGA/Working Group? If financial support is not available, would you be unable to attend the meeting? If partial financial support can be provided, could you use it? OTHER INFORMATION Those who wish to enjoy an extended stay, traveling around Japan, should note that July and August are busy months for tours in Japan. This is particularly the case for Hokkaido where the summer climate is comfortable compared with the mainland Japan. LOC recommends earlier reservation of tickets and hotels. If we receive some similar requests, we are ready to organize a group tour for a few to several days. Meditation in the Far East can also be experienced in the two old cities, Kyoto and Nara. A two-day tour to these cities can also be organized upon request, in particular for those who take return flights from Kansai Airport. In any case, requests must be made together with the registration. ============= Beginning of Registration Form (cut here) ============= REGISTRATION FORM TO BE RETURNED BEFORE 15TH APRIL 1996 TO: 13TH WORKSHOP ON ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION IN THE EARTH c/o Yoshimori Honkura Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Tokyo Institute of Technology 2-12-1 Ookayama, Tokyo 152, Japan E-mail: EMW@geo.titech.ac.jp Phone: +81-3-5734-2341 Fax: +81-3-5499-4093 Surname:______________________ First Name:__________________________ Mr/Ms:____ Affiliation:___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ Address:_______________________________________________________________________ City:____________________ Postal Code:__________________ Country:______________ Phone:_________________________________________________________________________ Fax: _________________________________________________________________________ E-mail:________________________________________________________________________ Accompanying Person(s):1._________________________ 2:__________________________ REGISTRATION FEES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Before April 15th 1996 | On and After April 15th 1996 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Full Delegate | 15000 Japanese Yen | 20000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Student | 5000 Japanese Yen | 7000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Accompanying Person | 5000 Japanese Yen | 7000 Japanese Yen | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Current rate: 100 Japanese Yen = 1 US$. * Registration fee is not requested for accompanying persons younger than 18. * PAYMENT OF REGISTRATION FEES SHOULD BE SUMMARIZED IN PAYMENT FORM. ---------------------------------------------------------- | TOTAL REGISTRATION: _____________________ Japanese Yen | ---------------------------------------------------------- ============= Beginning of Accommodation Form (cut here) ============= ACCOMMODATION FORM TO BE RETURNED BEFORE 15TH APRIL 1996 TO: 13TH WORKSHOP ON ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION IN THE EARTH c/o Yoshimori Honkura Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Tokyo Institute of Technology 2-12-1 Ookayama, Tokyo 152, Japan E-mail: EMW@geo.titech.ac.jp Phone: +81-3-5734-2341 Fax: +81-3-5499-4093 Surname:______________________ First Name:__________________________ Mr/Ms:____ Affiliation:___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ Accompanied by:1.____________________________ 2:_______________________________ Access to Workshop Place: Air_____, Train_____ or Others (e.g., Boats !)_______ If Air, specify the airport below.
