A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material, or a special event about to come up, to warrant distribution. Not all of us in the working group have access to an email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Also, please forward this to colleagues who may not yet be on my email list and ask them to forward their address to me. Copies of previous electronic newsletters can be obtained from either the MTNet WWW site or by anonymous ftp login to www.cg.nrcan.gc.ca in directory pub/mtnet/docs. Please submit any comments/articles/news-items/gossip/corrections to jones@cg.nrcan.gc.ca. I am particularly looking for meeting and conference reports, papers (EM and non-EM) in the news, high impact EM studies, etc. Contents: >>>20.1 Sinaia workshop >>>20.1.1 Sinaia replies >>>20.1.2 Sinaia program >>>20.1.3 Sinaia programme committee >>>20.1.4 Sinaia financial support requests >>>20.2 Onuma issue released soon >>>20.3 New book on geomagnetism >>>20.4 Ph.D studentship at ETH >>>20.5 PostDoctoral position at Cambridge >>>20.6 New Orleans '98 SEG has EM component >>>20.7 U.S. MT Instrumentation Facility >>>20.8 MTNet news >>>20.8.1 LiMS v4.1: codes available for DOS >>>20.8.2 Uncorrected COPROD2 data available >>>20.8.3 New versions of Randy Mackie's 2D and 3D codes available >>>Appendix: Email list IMPORTANT DEADLINES:.. 15 DECEMBER 1997: Abstract deadline for EGS 98. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings of the season to you all. May this year end well for you, and may 1998 bring you happiness and success. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>20.1 Sinaia workshop ====================== >>>20.1.1 Sinaia replies ------------------------ I now have a total of 283 replies to the Sinaia questionnaire. They can be viewed on web page http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/workshops/sinaia/replies.txt The breakdown is:- QUESTION 1: Attendance 1A 116 1B 83 1C 35 1D 50 QUESTION 2: Accommodation 2A 57 2B 57 2C 65 2D 78 QUESTION 3: MT-DIW4 3A 22 3B 42 3C 65 3D 100 In summary, if we adopt a probable attendance formula of 1A + 2/3*1B + 1/3*1C + 1/6*1D we get a replied likely attendance of 191. Also, there will be attendees who do not have email or who have not replied. So I think we can confidently predict an attendance in the low 200s. MT-DIW4 has got good support, with a "hard-core" of 22 plus up to 42 others, of which likely at least 10-15 will appear. So we can predict something like 30-35 for MT-DIW4 attendance. Its location has yet to be decided, either Sinaia or Bucharest (or somewhere else?). Dumitru suggests Sinaia as the more appropriate. All those who replied "2A" or "2B" will receive news of the MT-DIW4 meeting by email. If you did not reply 2A or 2B and want to continue to receive news, let me know. If you have not yet answered the questionnaire, please do so as soon as possible. Also, if you change your answers, please let me know. We need to get firm numbers for continued workshop planning purposes. >>>20.1.2 Sinaia program ------------------------ The program for the Sinaia workshop is as follows... Session 1. The Financial Support Request Committee, consisting of:- Committee positions Names Chairman, Working Group A G Jones Chairman, Local Organizing Committee D Stanica Co-Chairman, Working Group P Tarits Chairman, Previous Local Organizing Committee Y Honkura NSF funding liaison A D Chave All requests for support, preferably by email, are to be directed to the Chairman of the Committee, Alan Jones (jones@cg.nrcan.gc.ca) . Dr. Alan G. Jones Geological Survey of Canada 1 Observatory Crescent Ottawa, Ontatio, K1A OY3 CANADA fax: +1-613-992-8836 The request must reach Alan Jones on or before April 15th 1998. Requests received after that date cannot be entertained, as decisions must be made in time for supported participants to book the cheapest possible airfares. ***PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL YOUR COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS KNOW OF THIS DATE*** The principle aim of the support funds is to enable as many students and young scientists as possible to attend our workshops. Given the high costs associated with the Onuma workshop, there will also be an attempt to aid a few established scientists in need. For the Onuma meeting, the following criteria were used to establish those cases most worthy of support: 1. No support if supported for either of the last two workshops. The philosophy here is obviously to spread the funds around. 2. Only "one" person per institute supported for airfare, registration, accommodation, and food. The philosophy here was to ensure that representation from as many institutes as possible occurred. We did not decide which "one", but asked those who came from the institute to decide, pointing out that they could share the support (one taking the airfare, another taking the accommodation, etc.). In all but one case this resulted in all those who applied from the same institute being able to find other means of support and to attend the workshop. We do not anticipate to have the same level as support as we did for the Onuma workshop, so we will probably have to invoke other criteria as well. Information Required -------------------- A request for support should include the following information:- 1. Basic information 1.1 Name, title 1.2 Precise postal address 1.2.1 Courier address if different from above 1.3 Email 1.4 Telephone (home and office) and fax numbers 1.5 Year of last degree, title, institution 1.6 Current position 1.7 Student? This meeting will have again a strong EM component, particularly related to mining activities, as in Denver '96. Abstract deadline is, as always for the SEG, early. Its March 2nd for paper submission, and March 16th for electronic submission. Abstract information can be obtained from http://seg.org/abstractkit98/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>20.7 U.S. MT Instrumentation Facility ======================================== [submitted by John Booker] A National MT Instrument Facility has recently been funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The three institutions that will own the equipment in this facility are the Universities of Washington, California at Riverside and Utah. However, this equipment will available to all U.S. academic groups through an open application process. When not in use by U.S. groups, the equipment may be available for lease to international colleagues. Five long period systems identical to the Geological Survey of Canada LIMS have been ordered and five more are expected to be ordered shortly. Together with five existing long period systems owned by the University of Washington, the facilty will have fifteen long period systems early in 1998. A 24-bit commercial wideband system which can be deployed in multi-site or profiling modes will be available in the very near future. Finally an academic MT system with capabilities not found in commercial systems will be completely refurbished and upgraded. This system will also be capable of multi-site or profiling deployment. U.S. Academic Institutions interested in using these instruments should consider joining the EMSOC Association, which will govern the EMSOC Facility Steering Committee (EFSC). The EFSC will consist of three members from the institutions that own the equipment and three members from the community elected by the EMSOC Association. To join the EMSOC Association requires only a letter addressed to: John Booker Geophysics, Box 351650 University of Washington Seattle WA, 98195 This letter simply needs to state your institution's desire to belong and commitment to abide by the Association Rules. It needs to be signed by an individual with authority to make institutional commitments. The first meeting of the EMSOC Association will be on Tuesday, December 9th at the AGU. If you can attend this meeting and wish to vote, you may bring a letter requesting membership with you. Criteria for handling equipment requests will be discussed at this meeting and will publicized subsequently. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>20.8 MTNet news ================== >>>20.8.1 LiMS v4.1: codes available for DOS -------------------------------------------- Version 4.1 of the cascade/restack processing codes are now available. They have also been compiled to run under DOS using the DOS4GW memory manager. You can download the source codes and the DOS executables from the LiMS processing codes page http://www.cg.nrcan.gc.ca/staff/jones/lims/progs.html >>>20.8.2 Uncorrected COPROD2 data available -------------------------------------------- At the request of a couple of groups, the original uncorrected COPROD2 data are available for download from the MTNet COPROD2 page http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/data/coprod2.html The data are all four elements of the MT impedance tensor at each of the 35 sites, plus the vertical field transfer functions. The data file is large, (Unix compressed tar file: 225 Kb, PKzip compressed file: 240 Kb). If this is too large for you to download, you can request a floppy disk of the data from Alan Jones. Please specify which compression you prefer. >>>20.8.3 New versions of Randy Mackie's 2D and 3D codes available ------------------------------------------------------------------ [submitted by Randy Mackie] Dear 2D and 3D MT program users: I have put new distributions of the 2D inversion and 3D forward codes on my anonymous ftp server. These updated versions fix some bugs that arose in the previous versions. You likely only saw the bug if you were inverting TE mode data, or using TE mode boundary values in the 3D code. You can find the codes at: ftp.geology.indiana.edu:/pub/randy See the appropriate README files for more information. Randy ps.
