A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material, or a special event about to come up, to warrant distribution. Not all of us in the working group have access to an email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Also, please forward this to colleagues who may not yet be on my email list and ask them to forward their address to me. Copies of previous electronic newsletters can be obtained from either the MTNet WWW site or by anonymous ftp login to www.cg.nrcan.gc.ca in directory pub/mtnet/docs. Please submit any comments/articles/news-items/gossip/corrections to jones@cg.nrcan.gc.ca. I am particularly looking for meeting and conference reports, papers (EM and non-EM) in the news, high impact EM studies, etc. Contents: >>>19.1 Electrode publications >>>19.2 Visiting Fellowship Available at GSC >>>19.3 Gough-Reitzel variometers: Update >>>19.4 Sinaia responses >>>19.5 Lower crustal conductivity >>>19.6 Address Update request >>>19.7 Information about our African colleagues >>>Appendix: Email list IMPORTANT DEADLINES:.. 15 DECEMBER 1997: Abstract deadline for EGS 98. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>19.1 Electrode publications ========================= [submitted by Keeva Vozoff] WANTED -- References on Electrodes In connection with an summary paper on the Garchy electrodes experiments it is planned to include a list of publications on electrodes - their theory, design, construction and/or performance. Please send complete reference details of publications and reports to harbourd@ozemail.com.au, or fax +61-2-9922-1383. Deadline is October 29th. Keeva Vozoff & Jim Macnae [Note: The deadline has been extended a few days. Please get info to Keeva as soon as possible.] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>19.2 Visiting Fellowship Available at GSC ============================================ The Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry sponsors, is looking for a suitably qualified recent Ph.D. researcher to work in the area of advancing application of the magnetotelluric method for mineral exploration problems. Some of the questions to be addressed are: 1. what is the optimum recording strategy for minimizing cost and maximizing imaging capability given a likely scenario; 2. can time series processing methods help to remove noisy components in natural-source MT data recorded close to a working mine; 3. whether to extend our current methodologies for dealing with small-scale galvanic scattering to include magnetic effects and 3D scattering of responses from a 3D regional structure; 4. what are the appropriate methods to use to account for "static shifts" of MT data; and 5. the validity of two-dimensional interpretation of data from an obviously three-dimensional environment. Also, cumulative experience needs to be gained in the application of MT in the highly complex geological environments of mining properties. The Fellow will be brought on under the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) program for "Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories". Information on this program can be obtained from NERC's Web site http://www.nserc.ca/programs/visien2.htm Under this program, you should hold a doctorate from a recognized university prior to taking up the fellowship. You should not have received your doctorate more than five years prior to the date of application. The application will be accepted if you are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a recognized university; however, you must expect to complete all requirements for your degree (including the thesis defence) within one year of submitting your application (e.g., by November 15, 1998, if applying for the November 15, 1997, deadline). You will not be allowed to take up your award until confirmation of completion of degree requirements is received. The initial appointment is for one year, with a renewal for a second year possible upon satisfactory demonstration of significant advances during the first year. The fellowship currently has an annual value of C$35,184, plus a travel allowance for fellow, spouse, and children. The stipend and travel allowance are subject to Canadian income tax. The deadline for application is NOVEMBER 15, 1997. All forms must be in NSERC's hands by that date. You will need Form 200, and it should be sent to: Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Scholarships and Fellowships Division Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council 350 Albert Street Ottawa, Ontario Canada K1A 1H5 The Fellow can start on or after APRIL 1, 1998, and must start before December 31, 1998. The preference is for the Fellow to start as soon as possible after the April 1st date. Due to the late nature of this advertisement, NSERC will accept a faxed version of the form by November 15th with a note that the original is in the mail and will be received very shortly after the deadline. The fax should go to Fernande Mainville at +1-613-992-5337. You can call her for Form 200 at +1-613-996-4363, or send her an email to fmm@nserc.ca. Should there not be a suitable applicant in this competition, then there will be a second competition with an application deadline of MARCH 15, 1998. They can be viewed on MTNet at URL http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/workshops/sinaia/replies.txt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>19.5 Lower crustal conductivity ================================== Phil Wannamaker has sent a considered comment on the paper by Yardley and Valley. The text can be viewed at: http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/fora/clc/wannamaker.23Oct97 and the four figures will be viewable as soon as possible. Phil would like to receive comments on his views prior to November 10th if possible, which is when he goes to the South Pole. Any later comments will be answered after the New Year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>19.6 Address Update request ============================== The working group address list has been updated based on the replies to the Sinaia Questionnaire. Please check your address on URL http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/addresses/addresses.html If there is a correction required, send it to Gwen Mason at mason@cg.nrcan.gc.ca You can do this from the Web page. Please also send notification of any deletions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>19.7 Information about our African colleagues ================================================ I am pleased to be able to report that I now have six email addresses for colleagues in Africa. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan G Jones Ottawa, 31 October, 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>Appendix: Email list ======================= The list updated to 31 October 1997 is available on MTNet at http://www.cg.NRCan.gc.ca/mtnet/email/email.html If you cannot access the WWW and need your own copy, please send me an email.
