These investigations are based on the premise that large-scale contrasting physical or chemical crustal properties can enhance or change the earth's magnetic field. Among these properties are electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability. A common theme of these investigations involves separation of the magnetic field into it's time varying and stationary components. Techniques developed for the segregation of these anomaly constituents will aid both topics of magnetic research. 1.05/5.05: Geomagnetic Effects on Technological Systems Aug 7, Thurs, PM D Boteler, Geomagnetic Laboratory, 1 Observatory Crescent, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0Y3 Canada Tel: +1 613 837 7915; Fax: +1 613 824 9803; e-mail: boteler@geolab.NRCan.gc.ca D Boerner [CANADA], R Pirjola [FINLAND] This session is concerned with the interaction between geomagnetic field variations and technological systems. Contributions are sought on every aspect of this problem including observations, modeling and analysis of effects. Particularly welcomed are papers evaluating the conditions, such as electric field magnitudes, that are likely to cause system problems. 1.06: Fast methods for imaging & inversion of large datasets Aug 8, Fri, AM, PM M Zhdanov, University of Utah, Dept of Geology and Geophysics, 717 Browning Bldg., Salt Lake City, Utah 84112, USA Tel: +1 801 581 7750; Fax: +1 801 581 7065; email: mzhdanov@mines.utah.edu P Weidelt [GERMANY] Contributions are sought which describe recent progress in the development of electromagnetic (EM) imaging and fast inversion techniques. Session emphasizes frequency domain and time domain EM imaging, rapid EM inversion datasets in complex geological structures. 1.07: Geological & geodynamic processes inferred from EM studies Aug 9, Sat, AM, PM P Wannamaker, University of Utah, Earth Sciences and Resources Inst., 1515 Mineral Square, Salt Lake City, UT 84112, USA Tel: +1 801 581 3547; Fax: +1 801 585 3540; email: pewanna@mines.utah.edu L Szarka [HUNGARY] The session emphasizes field EM studies which help to choose between important competing hypotheses in structural evolution, physico-chemical state, and geodynamic processes of the Earth. Studies may be of any scale but should highlight use of independent geological and geophysical information to constrain the interpretation. 1.08: Electromagnetic induction studies Aug 5, Tues, AM, PM A G Jones, Geological Survey of Canada, 1 Observatory Crescent, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0Y3, Canada Tel : +1 613 992 4968; Fax: +1 613 992 8836; email: jones@cg.NRCan.gc.ca T Korja [SWEDEN] Contributions are sought which describe research endeavours using both natural and controlled source methods at all scales, from local to global. The breadth of the session is wide, from instrumentation development to processing and to inversion. Geological/tectonic interpretations should primarily be given in Symposium 1.07. 5.13: Sq and L Studies at Individual Observatories Aug 14, Thurs, AM JC Gianibelli, Department of Geomagnetism, Faculty of Astronomical and Geophysical Sciences, La Plata National University, 1900 La Plata Argentina Tel: +54-21-21-7308 or +21-3-8810/x132; Fax: +54-21-21-1761; e-mail: jcg@fcaglp.fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar S Malin [TURKEY] The importance of digital systems registration of geomagnetic observatories on the Sq-L studies. Classical and new methods and techniques for Sq and L determinations. Solar Cycle, Stational and other changes. Equatorial Electrojet effects. Sq and L in high latitudes. Methods for precise Lunar Tidal components detection. selection criteria of Q days or quiet intervals over Sq and L studies. 7.01: Equatorial Electrojet Studies Aug 4, Mon, AM, PM CA Onwumechili, 69 Lansdowne Drive, Hackney, London E8 3EP UK C A Mauzadier [FRANCE] Papers on the results of the IEEY campaign, recent observations, techniques and theoretical studies on the EEJ are requested. The IEEY data catalogue will be discussed, as well as the plans for the EEJ research in the next years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>16.2 PEPI Special Issue ========================== [submitted by B.J. Wannamaker] Following the success of the AGU session on electrical conductivity models held at the 1996 fall AGU (see below), PEPI has agreed to a special section or issue to cover this topic. Papers presented at the AGU meeting, as well as others relevant to this topic, will be reviewed and considered for publication under the same conditions as other PEPI papers, but with B.J. Wanamaker and S. Constable acting as special editors. Please indicate your intention to submit a manuscript to this issue to one of the special editors by March 15, 1997. The deadline for receipt of manuscripts is June 1, 1997. The AGU call for abstracts: A REFERENCE EARTH ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY MODEL This session will be devoted to discussion of Earth's electrical conductivity as a function of depth using constraints from both field and laboratory experiments. Emphasis is placed on constructing a reference Earth model, with discussions of uncertainties and inconsistencies in field and laboratory data as appropriate. Abstracts relating to general aspects of Earth's electrical conductivity which contribute to such a model are welcome. B.J.
