A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material, or a special event about to come up, to warrant distribution. Not all of us in the working group have access to an email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Also, please forward this to colleagues who may not yet be on my email list and ask them to forward their address to me. Copies of previous electronic newsletters can be obtained from either the MTNet WWW site or by anonymous ftp login to mtnet.cg.emr.ca in directory pub/mtnet/docs. Due to the lower-than-expected registration, and that many registrants require financial assistance to attend (which we do not have), we feel that there will be insufficient presentations to warrant holding a two-day meeting at the offices of the Geological Survey of Japan prior to the Onuma EM Induction Workshop. Accordingly, the planned MT-DIW3 meeting for 9th and 10th July, 1996, will not take place. In its stead, those who have analyzed the Kayabe dataset will have an opportunity to present their material at an informal evening session during the Onuma workshop. This evening session will be open to all registrants of the Onuma workshop. The sense that we have from the community is that there is certainly a desire to continue to hold these MT Data Interpretation Workshops, but that the costs involved in attending this one, on top of the costs to attend the Onuma workshop, just made it too expensive. Also, a few colleagues had expressed the thought that by taking on a 3D dataset we were going too far too fast, as there are few 3D inversion codes available. Our response to this is that those with 2D algorithms can try the two 2D profiles of data, and perhaps try something novel by requiring the structure at the intersection of the two profiles to be the same for both models. We can discuss these issues at the Onuma meeting. At the moment, we are planning to see just what interest there is in holding an MT-DIW in concert with the 1998 workshop. The Kayabe dataset could still be the dataset to be examined. We would appreciate your comments. Sorry this is coming so late, but we kept holding off hoping that more people would register. With regards, Alan G Jones and Yasuo Ogawa -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>13.2 1996 EM workshop: financial support update ================================================== Through the activities of Prof Y Honkura, we now have quite a lot of funds available for distribution to aid those who would otherwise be unable to attend the workshop. However, the requests are for double the funds we have available. If you are able to tap into funds from your national/industrial/academic sources, please let either Prof Honkura or myself know as soon as possible. We have many deserving cases. The academic funding sources are:- IUGG IAGA ILP U.S. NSF JSPS Japanese Ministry of Education Other Japanese sources For the "industry" base, I have so far obtained commitments of support from:- EMI Geotools METRONIX Phoenix Geophysics Zephyr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>13.3 1996 EM workshop: Posters for all ========================================= We have received 209 abstracts for the Onuma workshop. This is fantastic! The workshop will be an excellent one with a lot of breadth. We have the usual problem of too little time to allow all those who wanted to present their work orally. Accordingly, we are going through the abstracts trying to choose which papers should be presented orally and which as posters. However, we ask that ALL contributors bring their contribution(s) in POSTER format, whether you are ultimately selected to present orally or not. This has the advantage of having your work on display for the whole workshop, and it leads to a better format for discussion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>13.4 Proposals for 1998 14th EM Induction Workshop ===================================================== As usual, during the 1996 Onuma EM Induction Workshop the location for the following meeting (1998) will be chosen by the Working Group Committee. To refresh your memories, we have had the meetings at:- Workshop Year Location Country I 1972 Edinburgh Scotland II 1974 Ottawa Canada III 1976 Sopron Hungary IV 1978 Murnau Germany V 1980 Istanbul Turkey VI 1982 Victoria Canada VII 1984 Ile-Ife Nigeria VIII 1986 Neuchatel Switzerland IX 1988 Sochi Russia X 1990 Ensenada Mexico XI 1992 Wellington New Zealand XII 1994 Brest France XIII 1996 Onuma Japan XIV 1998 ? ? We are soliciting proposals from those who wish to host the 1998 meeting. This is a very open request, and all proposals will be treated equally. There is no undeclared first-place candidate already. We genuinely wish to see proposals from anyone. Proposals in writing should reach me, as the current Chair of the Working Group Committee, up to and including the first day of the Onuma workshop (12th July). I would prefer to have these proposals sooner than that as some members of the committee will not be at Onuma and I wish to solicit their opinion. If you send your proposal prior to July 5th, then you can email it to jones@cg.emr.ca or fax to +1-613-992-8836. After that date, you must either hand it to me at the meeting, or have a colleague hand it to me, on 12th July. These proposals should outline the following:- 1. Location 2. Dates 3. Costs 3.1 internal transportation from nearest international airport 3.2 registration (full, student, and accompanying) 3.3 accomodation (affordable accom. for students?) 3.4 average daily living costs 4. Potential additional sources of funding 5. Possible excursions 6. People to be involved 7. Statements of support 8. Any other pertinent information Also, you should be prepared to give a 5-10 min presentation at the business meeting, complete with slides if possible of the conference location, city, attractions, facilities, etc. If you are unable to attend the workshop, then send the materials to me and I will make the presentation for you. Notes on some of the above: 1. Location: We have had our meetings in many settings, from large cities (Edinburgh, Istanbul) to small, semi-isolated places (Murnau, Ile-Ife, Onuma). Certainly, the small setting is more conducive for generating a workshop atmosphere. However, the choice of location is entirely at the disgression of the proposer. 2. Dates: The dates of our workshops have varied from June to early-November. The majority of them has been in July or August. However, as with the location, the choice of dates is entirely at the disgression of the proposer. Give us the best dates that fit in with your local conditions. 3. Costs: Of course these must be as low as possible. In particular, our emphasis is to try to get as many students to our meetings as possible, so affordable accommodation, for not only students but also scientists from less wealthy countries, should be available. 4. Funding: As we go through this global recession and change in society's emphasis on science, more and more scientists are approaching us for assistance with their costs. So the more funds available, the more people can attend. We do not expect you to know now what funds you can raise, but to give us an idea of the avenues that you will try. 5. Excursions: Should be fun. 6. People: Please list your "Local Organizing Committee" members. 7. Statements: Statements of support from e.g. your organization, your national colleagues, your funding agencies, etc. After the presentations, there will be open, general discussion on the relative merits of each case. The proposals and these comments will be considered carefully by the Working Group Committee members when they make their decision. The decision will be announced at the workshop, giving everybody two years to prepare for the next meeting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>13.5 Geomagnetic activity forecasting service ================================================ Natural Resources Canada Geological Survey of Canada NEW GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY FORECASTING SERVICES effective 16 June 1995 Some new geomagnetic activity forecasting services have recently replaced earlier forms produced by the Geomagnetism Program of the Geological Survey of Canada. * * * 1. The fundamental service now produces an updated activity review and forecast at 15 minutes past every hour, instead of once per day. In the event of a major disturbance, an unscheduled updated forecast may be issued at any time. This service is currently available via Internet ftp, or via a modem. Additional access routes will be provided in due course. The service is available in English and French. Access via Internet: ftp sunone.geolab.emr.ca login anonymous password (your e-mail address) cd pub/forecast get forecast.txt ----- in English get activite.txt ----- in French exit Access via modem: by first sending a written request for modem access and the issuance of a password to: Dr. H.-L. Lam Geological Survey of Canada Geomagnetism 1 Observatory Crescent OTTAWA, Canada K1A 0Y3 Fax: 613-824-9803 A password and detailed instructions will then be sent out. The reviews and forecasts are issued for three major regions: subauroral zone, auroral zone, and polar cap. First, a review of activity over the last 24 hours is given, followed a review for the last 6 hours. Activity forecasts for the 6 hour interval from the time of issue, for the 24 hour interval from the time of issue, and for the following 24 hours, are given. * * * 2. A less detailed service (as above but without the 6 hour reviews and forecasts) is available via telephone. This service is also updated every hour. For access, dial 613-992-1299. The service is available in English and French. The caller will be prompted to press 1 for English, or 2 for French. A phone without touch- tone capability will automatically first receive the forecast in English, followed by the French version. * * * With the increased frequency of updates throughout the day, and with the addition of Internet access, it is hoped that services to users will be greatly improved. For further information on the new services, please contact: Dr. R.L. Coles Geological Survey of Canada Geomagnetism 1 Observatory Crescent OTTAWA, Canada K1A 0Y3 Fax: 613-824-9803 Internet: coles@geolab.emr.ca * * * 3. For the near future, the long-term 27-day forecast service will continue as before, with new forecasts issued at three-weekly intervals. Requests to be placed on our mailing list for these 27-day forecasts should be directed to Dr. H.-L. Lam at the address noted above. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>13.6 EFFECTIVE EXPLORATION IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN ================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS EFFECTIVE EXPLORATION IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN 19-20 November 1996, Burlington House, London This conference will seek to demonstrate effective, integrated hydrocarbon exploration strategies in difficult and expensive terrains. 3D seismic has provided a revolutionary tool for hydrocarbon exploration in offshore and onshore terrains where the surveys can be acquired in a cost-effective manner. Many frontier areas however, are located in difficult terrains where the cost of 3D seismic is prohibitive and even 2D seismic is likely to be very expensive and of poor quality due to the surface and near surface conditions. In difficult terrains, effective seismic data acquisition and processing together with integration of non-seismic techniques is the key to successful exploration. Papers are invited from all areas of exploration for the following four half day sessions: Improving the cost and quality of land seismic New developments in non-seismic techniques Integrated exploration techniques Case histories - how to succeed in difficult terrain Abstracts should be submitted by June 28th 1996 to the convener, Roland Swift, British Gas, Gas Research Centre, Ashby Road, Loughborough LE11 3QU.
