Working Group I.2 of IAGA - Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth ================================================================== Electronic Newsletter #12: December 1995 ---------------------------------------- Previous newsletters: enews.Oct92 - 1st enews.Jan93 - 2nd enews.Feb93 - 3rd enews.Oct93 - 4th enews.Feb94 - 5th enews.Mar94 - 6th enews.Jun94 - 7th enews.Aug94 - 8th enews.Sep94 - 9th enews.Jun95 - 10th enews.Oct95 - 11th enews.Dec95 - 12th (this one) This is the twelfth electronic newsletter for our group. A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material, or a special event about to come up, to warrant distribution. Not all of us in the working group have access to an email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Also, please forward this to colleagues who may not yet be on my email list and ask them to forward their address to me. The main purpose of this newsletter is to inform you of the plans for providing financial support for the 1996 Onuma EM workshop. Copies of previous electronic newsletters can be obtained from either the MTNet WWW site or by anonymous ftp login to mtnet.cg.emr.ca in directory pub/mtnet/docs. Please submit any comments/articles/news-items/gossip/corrections to jones@cg.emr.ca Contents: >>>12.1 MTNeT on WWW >>>12.2 1996 EM workshop: financial support update >>>12.3 1996 EM workshop: financial support requests >>>12.4 1996 EGS meeting >>>12.5 Kayabe 3D dataset >>>Appendix: Email list IMPORTANT DEADLINES:.. NOVEMBER 30, 1995: Notification to Y. Honkura for Onuma workshop DECEMBER 15, 1995: Abstract deadline for EGS meeting APRIL 15, 1996: Deadline for submission of financial request form to Prof. Y. Honkura (see 12.2) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>12.1 MTNet on WWW ==================== MTNet on World Wide Web is being well accessed. Scientists are surfing in from all over the globe to read the news and download programs and data. The MTNet site earned the distinction of a pair of sunglasses on Yahoo. (Quote "Sites with sunglasses tags are ones we think have good presentation/content for their respective topic area. Usually, you should check these sites first.") To connect to it, open location:- http://www.cg.emr.ca/mtnet/mtnet.html (note that this is the permanent location, which differs from the location given in the last enews). If you have any difficulties connecting to it, please contact Erick Adam (adam@cg.emr.ca) or Jim Craven (craven@cg.emr.ca). If you have difficulties with the links once you are at the MTNet Home Page, please contact myself (jones@cg.emr.ca). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>12.2 1996 EM workshop: financial support update ================================================== May I repeat that we should all be making a special effort to secure financial support for the Onuma, Hokkaido, EM workshop. The more support funds we are able to raise, the more students and colleagues, who have difficulties with travelling to Japan, will be able to attend the meeting. I am trying to expand our "industry" base, and have so far obtained commitments of support from:- EMI Phoenix Geophysics METRONIX Schlumberger Western Atlas Zephyr If you approach any of your national organizations or companies, please inform me so that we do not duplicate effort. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>12.3 1996 EM workshop: financial support requests ==================================================== Support requests will be considered by the ad-hoc Working Group. From experience gained over the last workshops, critical information must be provided by all applicants. The information required is listed below. The Financial Support Request Committee, consisting of:- Committee positions Names Chairman, Working Group A G Jones Chairman, Local Organizing Committee Y Honkura Co-Chairman, Working Group P Tarits Chairman, Previous Local Organizing Committee P Tarits NSF funding liaison G Jiracek All requests for support, preferably by email, are to be directed to the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Yoshi Honkura (yhonkura@geo.titech.ac.jp"). Prof. Y. Honkura Dept. of Earth and Planetary Science Tokyo Institute of Technology 2121 Okayama Meguroku, Tokyo 152 JAPAN The request must reach Prof. Honkura on or before April 15th 1996. Requests received after that date cannot be entertained, as decisions must be made in time for supported participants to book the cheapest possible airfares. The principle aim of the support funds is to enable as many students and young scientists as possible to attend our workshops. Given the high costs associated with the Onuma workshop, there will also be an attempt to aid a few established scientists in need. Information Required -------------------- A request for support should include the following information:- 1. Basic information 1.1 Name, title 1.2 Precise postal address 1.2.1 Courier address if different from above 1.3 Email 1.4 Telephone (home and office) and fax numbers 1.5 Year of last degree, title, institution 1.6 Current position 1.7 Student? Financial details 3.1 Amount of travel request with detailed cost breakdown 3.1.1 Airfare. 3.1.1.1 Is this the cheapest fare available? 3.1.1.2 When must it be booked by? 3.1.1.3 Would it be cheaper to book it from Japan and send you the tickets? 3.1.2 Ground transportation 3.1.3 Visa or other fees 3.1.4 Other costs 3.2 Do you require accommodation paid? 3.3 Do you require per diem support? 3.4 Do you require registration paid? 3.5 Amount of other support provided by other sponsors 3.6 List requests to other agencies for support 3.6.1 Give date(s) when decision(s) will be made 3.7 Justification (for non-student) 3.7.1 Performing in any "official" capacity? 3.8 Do you intend to stay for the whole meeting ? You can get information from the EGS Web page:- http://www.mpae.gwdg.de/EGS/EGS.html There are quite a few sessions of interest to us, particularly SE2 and SE19. They are listed in the October enewsletter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>12.5 Kayabe 3D dataset ========================= Again a reminder that the Kayabe 3D MT dataset is available now for download. Information was given in the last newsletter. The data can be obtained from MTNet WWW site, or by anonymous ftp login to mtnet.cg.emr.ca (directory pub/mtnet/data/kayabe).
