We are re-instating the position of "Past-Chair" as an Observer. This did not occur during the last four years with Sven Hjelt as he was Chair of Division I of IAGA, and wanted to avoid conflict-of-interest. George has Observer status on the committee because of his efforts securing National Science Foundation support for our workshops over the last few years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>11.3 1996 EM workshop: financial support =========================================== As we discussed in Boulder, we should all be making a special effort to secure financial support for the Onuma, Hokkaido, EM workshop. The more support funds we are able to raise, the more students and colleagues, who have difficulties with travelling to Japan, will be able to attend the meeting. I am trying to expand our "industry" base, and have so far got commitments of support from:- EMI Phoenix Geophysics METRONIX Schlumberger Zephyr If you approach any of your national organizations or companies, please inform me so that we do not duplicate effort. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>11.4 1996 EM workshop: Program ================================= At our Boulder meeting, we agreed upon the following Scientific Sessions:- Applications of electromagnetic methods for geothermal exploration [Reviewed] Electrical and magnetic approaches to seismic and volcanic activity studies [Reviewed] Electromagnetic contributions to oceanic studies Electrical properties from the laboratory to the field scales: anisotropy, heterogeneity, and dispersion effects Electromagnetic imaging techniques [Reviewed] Mantle and global induction studies Emerging techniques in processing, modelling and inversion Paradigm shifts resulting from electromagnetic studies Local and regional electromagnetic studies [Poster session] Other contributions -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>11.5 1996 EGS meeting ======================== The deadline for the submission of abstracts to the EGS for the 1996 meeting in The Hague is DECEMBER 15TH 1995. This is an excellent opportunity for those of us in our community who are showing that EM studies can make significant contributions to geological/ tectonic studies. The meeting is two weeks after the EM workshop in Hokkaido, so you can have a two week holiday in either Japan or China, then go to the IGC. The sessions that I know are of interest to some of us are:- Special Symposium D: Structure of the Lithopshere and Deep Processes D-1 The nature of the lowqer crust and the exchange between the crust and the mantle D-3 Anisotropy of the mantle and mantle rheology D-5 Global Geoscience Transects D-6 Continental scientific drilling and site selection D-7 Lithospheric structure, composition, and dynamics of orogenic belts Special Symposium F: Global Tectonic Zones F-1 Formation, evolution, and dynamics of the Tethyan tectonic domain F-2 Tectonic evolution and the mechanism of uplift of the Tibetan plateau F-6 Lithospheric structure and dynamics of the Antarctic continent and its continental shelf F-7 Continental rift systems and their genetic mechanism F-8 Tectonic evolution of the African continent F-9 The break-up and accretion of the Asia continent Special Symposium G: Orogenic Belts G-1 Types of orogenic belts, processes, mechanisms and models of orogeny G-3 Kinetic partial melting and fluid effects in the crust of orogenic belts Special Symposium I: Energy and Mineral Resources for the 21st Century I-2 Prospects for exploration of energy and mineral resources I-3 Distribution, assessment, and prediction of geothermal resources Special Symposium K: Progress of International Geoscience Projects K-1 Understanding the continental lithosphere: results from the application of a diversity of approaches Symposium 13: Geophysics 13-3 Electromagnetic properties of the crust and mantle 13-4 Exploration geophysics The Second Circular was distributed in April, 1995. To receive more information, the Second Circular asks that you contact:- Prof. Zhao Xun Deputy Secretary General 30th Internation Geological Congress P.O. Box 823 Beijing 100037 P.R. CHINA Tel: 86-10-8327772 or 86-10-8323188 Fax: 86-10-8328928 email: zhaox@bepc2.ihep.ac.cn The abstract submission deadline is NOVEMBER 1ST 1995. Nigel Edwards is the Convenor of Session 13-3, and apparently he has received few submissions from the "west" to date. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>11.7 Kayabe 3D dataset ========================= Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Shinji Takasugi (GERD) and Dr. Yasuo Ogawa (GSJ), a 209-station MT dataset owned by a half-private/half-government organization NEDO (New Energy and industrial technology Development Organization) is now available and will be examined at the MT-DIW3 meeting. Forty-eight of the sites are scattered around the 2D grid of the remaining 161. These grid sites are on a 100 m grid of thirteen lines, with thirteen sites on each line (except the northwesternmost). The lines run SW-NE, and are lettered "a" to "m" from the SE to the NW, and the sites on each line are numbered "0" to "12" from NE to SW. For MT-DIW3 comparison, participants can either interpret the whole dataset using 3D algorithms, or can take the two central lines from the grid - line "kbg" going SW-NE and all stations "06" going SE-NW for 2D methods. There are thirteen stations on each line, so this 2D dataset consists of 25 stations (station kbg06 is at the centre of the grid and is on both profiles). The data are available in three formats; EDI, J-format, and as a Geotools database. The dataset can best be obtained through MTNeT on WWW (see above). If you do not have access to a Web browser, then you can obtain it by anonylous ftp login to my ftp-server: ftp nazca.cg.emr.ca anonymous cd pub/mtnet/data/kayabe get README <---read README file and choose which format you want. bin <---sets binary transfer get kayabe...tar.Z quit The files are stored as compressed, tar files. If you need another format, please contact me. kayabe.tar.Z all 209 stations in EDI format (2080 kB) kayabe2d.tar.Z 25 stations of two 2D profiles in EDI format (1084 kB) kayabe2dj.tar.Z 25 stations of two 2D profiles in J format (135 kB) kayabej.tar.Z all 209 stations in J format (260 kB) kayabeprf.tar.Z profile files for all sites (4.6 kB) kayabegt.tar.Z all 209 stations in GT+ format (11437 kB) Users of the Kayabe dataset must agree to the following two conditions:- (1) he/she is required to express acknowledgements to NEDO in his/her publication (including proceedings) and (2) is obliged to send a copy of any written material using the dataset to Dr. Shinji Takasugi who will gather the manuscripts and hand them to NEDO. The address of Dr. Shinji Takasugi is as follows:- Dr. Shinji Takasugi Geothermal Enegy Research and Development Co. Ltd. Kyodo Bldg, 11-7, Kabuto-cho, Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, 103, JAPAN email: KYC04752@niftyserve.or.jp, FAX:81-3-3666-5289 Please send me an email if you take the dataset. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan G Jones Ottawa, Oct 6, 1995 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>Appendix: Email list ======================= IAGA Working Group I.2 Internet email list: 06 October 1995 ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes noted since listing dated: 7 June 1995 Additions/corrections/deletions to: jones@cg.emr.ca Temporary addresses identified by termination date ? instead of the address indicates that mail was returned from that address when last sent.
