Working Group I.2 of IAGA - Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth ================================================================== Electronic Newsletter #6: March 1994 ------------------------------------ Previous newsletters: enews.Oct92 - 1st enews.Jan93 - 2nd enews.Feb93 - 3rd enews.Oct93 - 4th enews.Feb94 - 5th enews.Mar94 - 6th (this one) This is the six electronic newsletter for our group. A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material, or a special event about to come up, to warrant distribution. Not all of us in the working group have access to email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Also, please forward this to colleagues who may not yet be on my email list and ask them to forward their address to me. ***************** *** DEADLINES *** ***************** MARCH 4: Pre-registration for the MT-DIW2 MARCH 15: Applications for financial support for Brest MAY 15: Registration for Brest MAY 15: Abstracts for Brest JUNE 1: Review papers for Brest JUNE 2: Remaining registration costs for MT-DIW2 JULY 28: Expanded abstracts for MT-DIW2 Copies of previous electronic newsletters can be obtained by anonymous ftp login to mtnet (either europe or northamerica) in directory pub/mtnet/docs. See below regarding the address list for instructions on how to login to these nodes. NOTE: Not all of you may have received the October 1993 newsletter. Please get it from mtnet. Please submit any comments/articles/news-items/gossip/corrections to jones@cg.emr.ca I would like to include in the next newsletter a list of "Field Activities", to show where we are working in 1994. MT-DIW2 ============= After a worrying start, there has now been good interest shown in having the MT-DIW2, with over 20+ people who have paid the pre-registration fee, and a further 10+ who have indicated very strong interest but who have not yet paid the fee. Thus it will go ahead as planned. Papua New Guinea dataset: ------------------------- The PNG dataset is now available (in the usual variety of formats and compressions) from your local MTNET. This dataset is small - of only 10 sites - and the data appear to be relatively simple. The profile is over a section of Darai Limestone, below which are conducting sediments which may be a source of hydrocarbons. The basic question that Charley Swift wants us to answer is "to understand why the thickness of the resistor (the Darai Limestone) from inversions is always less than what we know (or think we know) to be there based upon geological constraints". Chevron (Australia) would also be interested in any further refinement in the location of the cutoff of the Darai Limestone. I have been sent sections of two models to explain the data. These are only faxed diagrams, but I will scan them soon and make them available in PostScript format on mtnet. NOTES: 1. If you downloaded an earlier set, you will only have obtained eight (8) sites not the full set of ten (10). Please download the set again. 2. The data are only currently available in J-format (both Unix and pkzip compressions). I am awaiting the SPECTRASECT information for two sites (21 & 22) before I can make the edi format and gt+ database files available. Posters: -------- Anyone who is unable to attend the MT-DIW2, but who works on one of the three main datasets or the COPROD2 set, can send a poster of their results to Adam Schultz. These posters will be displayed for the duration of the MT-DIW2. If there is time in the program, a brief synopsis of the main results will be orally presented by one of the participants. Publication: ------------ It is my understanding that JGG are very happy with the special publication that came out, and are prepared to offer their journal again for the MT-DIW2. As with the MT-DIW1, submission of manuscripts and diagrams is preferentially by email, and the text must be in TeX or LaTeX using the JGG style files. Submission of a paper for this issue is for all who have something to say about one of the designated datasets - it is not restricted to attendees only. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>3. AGU Report ================= (Submitted by George Jiracek) Colleagues: I have been asked by the AGU to prepare a five page overview on "Time-Varying Electric and Magnetic Fields" (or some other title) for the U. S. National Report to the IUGG (1991-1994). The report will emphasize the frontier and new research directions in EM Earth studies in the last 4 years. I am asking for your help to do this since I am not aware of everything that has happened. So, please send contributions (published papers, reports, abstracts, comments, etc.) to me for possible inclusion in the report. The report is due on May 15 and I was asked last week to do this, so please send things as soon as you can. We want or science to be represented as strong as possible. Thanks. George R.
