Working Group I.2 of IAGA - Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth ================================================================== Electronic Newsletter #1: October 1992 -------------------------------------- This is the first electronic newsletter for our group. A newsletter will be sent around when there is enough material to warrant distrobution. Not all of us in the working group have an email address; if you are aware of colleagues who are not likely to receive this newsletter, please give them a paper copy (but chastise them for using trees instead of electrons). Please submit any comments/articles/news-items/gossip/corrections to myself at jones@cg.emr.ca 1. Argentina 1993 ================= Our group is active in six (6) sessions at Argentina. Please note that the abstract deadline is very early. It is FEBRUARY 15TH 1993. Topic & Convenors ----------------- >>>Electromagnetic studies of the oceans and seafloor S C Constable, H Utada & L L Vanyan This session deals with electrical properties and electromagnetic studies of Earth's ocean system and seafloor. Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to, controlled and natural source soundings of the seafloor, oceanic induction, oceanographic applications of EM methods, the coast effect, and instrumentation. >>>Crustal Conductivity Studies with Borehole Control V Haak, M Lastovickova & A A Zhamaletdinov Session theme not available (to me) at present. >>>Electrojet Studies E Mbipom, J Ferber & N B Trivedi Of particular interest to this session will be papers dealing with recent studies, either ground-based or rocket, of the equatorial electrojet. Model studies, particularly those dealing with 3-D structures in the electrojet are also welcome. In addition, it will be pertinent to consider papers dealing with theory, observation and generation of the counter-electrojet. >>>Large-Scale Magnetic & Electromagnetic ANomalies in the Continental Lower Crust M Mareschal, J L LeMouel & G Schwarz The focus will be on possible correlations between lower-crustal magnetic and electrical anomalis in continental crusts. Papers dealing with magnetic and electric properties of deep crustal rocks and the conditions under which they can co-exist are particularly invited. Also of interest are comparison of observed regional magnetic anomalis and long period EM field data over the same area. >>>EM Studies of Modern & Ancient Subduction Zones P Wannamaker, T Korja & Y Ogawa We invite papers dealing with electromagnetic imaging of modern and ancient subduction zones. We focus on the EM results which constrain the tectonic processes of the subduction system. Comparative studies with other geophysical/ geological information will be presented. EM studies of the collision boundaries are also welcome. >>>Interpretation of conductivity models of the continental lower crust: Fluids or carbon; Can we tell the difference? A G Jones, T Shankland & A Adam The continental lower crust is typically one to two orders of magnitude higher in conductance than laboratory studies would suggest. The two main competing hypotheses to explain this observation are either saline fluids or interconnected grain-boundary films of carbon. To both, however, there are serious objections. Papers are solicited which address this apparent dichotomy or which propose alternative explanations for this enigma. 2. MT-DIW1 ========== The first magnetotelluric data interpretation workshop was attended by 25 participants, and we had a total of some 15 presentations on various aspects of the COPROD2 and BC87 datasets. We have decided to publish the papers, either in a GSC Special Paper or in JGG, and the submission deadline has been set at NOVEMBER 30TH 1992. I have contacted all those who requested the datasets to determine the extent of interest, and the preferred vehicle for publication. If you do not receive this material shortly, please contact me. There will be a second MT-DIW (MT-DIW2) prior to the next EM workshop in 1994. Charlie Swift is actively seeking an industry dataset for us to use. The actual venue is, as yet, undecided. 3. Rapid Relaxation Inverse =========================== John Booker and Torquil Smith have made available their RRI code. For more information contact John at booker@geops.geo.washington.edu 4.
